“The Box and The Plane” delves into childhood artifacts to explore the escalating political situation in Venezuela, woven through the lens of aviation, queer desire, and complex family dynamics. The work begins with the discovery of a childhood notebook where I copied maps from airline timetables and atlases, particularly focusing on South America. From there, it transitions into reflections on growing up in Venezuela, interspersed with childhood scenes, and introduces my grandmother’s homophobia. These personal narratives serve as a framework to address the deepening political unrest in the country, connecting personal history with broader socio-political themes. This was presented as part of my MFA degree show presentation at Goldsmiths, University of London and was nominated for the Almacantar award.
